Dimensions of Human Experience

The subject focuses on the meaning of ‘self’. Using the medium of ‘social literature’ (including novels, plays, poetry, film, biographies, autobiographies etc) the subject aims to heighten students’ awareness of the ways in which factors such as class, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual preference, abilities that shape human experience. Attention is also drawn to the way our own experiences impact on the way we communicate, interpersonally, in groups and communities.
Learning Objectives:
- to develop a beginning understanding of the means by which we come to ‘know’ the social world and our place in it;
- to develop an awareness of what ‘theory’ means in this process of knowing;
- to use the various mediums of communication to develop an understanding of human interaction;
- to develop a critical awareness of one’s own ‘self’;
- to develop an awareness of alternative ways of perceiving, interpreting and acting upon the environment and in so doing to enhance one’s ability to empathise with others.
Assessment by two written assignments up to 1,500 words each (50% each).
