Advanced Physiology

Prerequisites: (BC2001 or BC2013) (BC2401 or PP2101) (BC2402 or PP2201)

36 lectures, 24 hours practicals. First semester.

Advanced topics in physiology including integrated cellular and organ system function. The subject builds on principles and concepts introduced in PP2101 and PP2201 focussing on the integrated structure and function of cells, tissues and organ systems. Advanced topics such as cell migration and adhesion, regulation of cellular proliferation and differentiation in the context of systems physiology (particularly the nervous system) will be discussed with examples from the current literature.

  1. functional aspects of cellular and systems physiology;
  2. structural aspects of cellular and systems physiology;
  3. integration of cellular and systems structure and function;
  4. discussion of current literature to illustrate examples of the above objectives.

Assessment by examination (65%); laboratory work (20%); assignments (15%).
