Pharmacy Practice 2

36 lectures, 24 tutorials, 12 hours practical placement. First semester.

Available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Pharmacy.

This subject is designed to create awareness of the professional aspects of pharmacy practice in both community and hospital pharmacy environments

It examines the social and behavioural aspects of pharmacy and the pharmacist’s role as a member of the health team and as a primary healthcare provider. The need for appropriate communication, interpersonal and counselling skills is discussed as is the resourcing and provision of appropriate information relating to primary healthcare promotion and the principles underlying quality use of medicines.

Learning Objectives:

  1. understand the factors which influence an individual’s fundamental perceptions and behaviour particularly within the context of social concepts of health and illness;
  2. awareness of the nature of healthcare professions and pharmacy’s role within the primary and secondary healthcare team;
  3. understand the fundamental concepts of quality in healthcare;
  4. awareness and understanding of the concepts of pharmaceutical care and of quality use of medication;
  5. awareness of the fundamental operations of a community and hospital pharmacy practice.

Assessment by a three-hour end-of-semester examination (60%); tutorials (30%); pharmacy experience project (10%). Satisfactory performance in all aspects of the subject is required to pass. The pharmacy experience project must be completed and attendance at tutorials is mandatory.
