Foundations of Nursing B

Prerequisites: NS1211

30 lectures, 10 tutorials, 30 hours nursing science laboratories, 105 hours clinical placement. Second semester and by distance education mode with a five-day residential school.

Available only to level 1 nursing science students.

The subject has three components. In the theoretical component the students review each level of health care, focusing on the nurse’s role in relation to hospitalisation for acute care. Further opportunities are given to apply critical thinking in the preparation of care plans in relation to acute care and to the care of individuals with disability. In the clinical component students extend their competency in foundation clinical skills in preparation for the third component, 90 hours of clinical placement in a low dependency setting.

Learning Objectives:

  1. demonstrate knowledge of the nurse’s role as a beginning practitioner in specified areas of nursing practice;
  2. demonstrate competence in the use of assessment tools and skills in those areas of practice;
  3. integrate and apply concepts from behavioural sciences, including those of illness behaviour and hospitalisation, in nursing practice;
  4. extend the skills used in clinical decision making in planning patient care;
  5. integrate knowledge from biophysical sciences, in providing safe nursing care;
  6. demonstrate an understanding of the concept of primary health care and knowledge of the roles and functions of the nurse in the community setting;
  7. demonstrate an understanding of the difficulties facing individuals with disability and their families in gaining equity in our society;
  8. outline the philosophies and theories which influence the provision of the services for individuals with disabilities in the community.

Assessment by on-course assessment (40%); examination (60%); clinical competencies (satisfactory level required).
