Foundations of Nursing A

39 lectures, 13 tutorials 26 hours practicals. First semester and by distance education mode with a five-day residential school.
Available only to level 1 nursing science students.
This subject has two components. In the theoretical component students explore the concepts of environment, caring and health. The different variables which affect health are reviewed and emphasis is given to ageing and health. Students are also introduced to the nursing process and problem-solving tools used in planning patient care. In the clinical component, students are given opportunities to acquire foundation clinical skills which will be practised in nursing skills laboratories.
Learning Objectives:
- demonstrate an understanding of the dominant concepts of nursing;
- critically evaluate the contribution of traditional and non-traditional health behaviours and practices;
- demonstrate an understanding of the influence cultural and spiritual values and beliefs have on health and health behaviours;
- develop skills in the use of a range of basic data collection tools the nurse may use to assess and monitor individual health status;
- apply critical thinking and problem solving at the level of competency of a first year student;
- integrate concepts from the Biophysical Sciences, Interactive Processes and Nursing Inquiry subjects;
- apply knowledge of the changes that occur during ageing from a physiological, psychological and sociological perspective.
Assessment by on-course assessment (40%); end-of-semester examination (60%); written documentation of competencies in the clinical setting (satisfactory level required).
