Creating Music 3A

Students will gain an appreciation of the music from the late 19th century to the present, an appreciation of music theatre and will acquire analytical skills in relation to instrumental and vocal works within the genre. Students will develop practical skills in music creation in a weekly workshop, especially through collaborations with theatre and visual arts students.

Learning Objectives:

  1. gain an understanding of techniques used in the composition of musicals and music theatre;
  2. acquire analytical skills pertaining to music within musicals and music theatre;
  3. gain a practical knowledge of composing for musicals and music theatre through the composition of original music theatre works;
  4. gain a working knowledge of the presentation of music theatre works through the composition of a music theatre project in collaboration with visual arts and theatre students.

Assessment by composition project: portfolio (40%), presentation/performance (30%); analysis (written analysis) (20%); attendance and participation (10%).
