Creating Music 2A

Students will continue their ongoing study of tonal music theory and composition techniques and will undertake a study of jazz theory and improvisation. Further studies in orchestration and arrangement are undertaken with a focus on jazz arrangement, along with further studies in the techniques of music anlaysis. Students will develop practical skills in music creation in a weekly workshop.
Learning Objectives:
- gain an understanding of techniques used in tonal music composition and anlaysis;
- gain an understanding of contemporary songwriting techniques and analysis;
- gain a knowledge of western wind instruments and the manner in which music is composed and arranged for winds;
- gain a practical knowledge of the advanced hardware and software systems used in music technology.
Assessment by tonal music techniques: worksheets (20%), examination (10%); orchestration worksheets (10%); improvisation (30%); analysis: written analysis (20%); attendance/participation (10%).
