Music Technologies 1

39 hours practicals. Students will be expected to undertake a further 2 hours per week of private work in the Music Technology computer laboratory. First semester.

The topics offered in this subject introduce students to many of the basics and shed light on some of the more advanced skills that music technologists need to develop. It is largely a practical subject where as well as attending the class students will be expected to spend a small number of regular weekly hours in the computer laboratory.

Learning Objectives:

  1. acquire a basic grasp of the skills required of a music technologist;
  2. stimulate a creative music-making approach through an introduction to improvisation and composition with music technology;
  3. develop the ear/eye relationship through an introduction to music notation on the computer;
  4. acquire knowledge of basic techniques on a variety of music technology instruments;
  5. develop skills in performance and concert preparation utilising music technology;
  6. appreciate the range of career opportunities available to students trained in music technology.

Assessment by assignment 1 (15%); assignment 2 (20%); assignment 3 (30%); class test (10%); course log book (15%); attendance (5%); participation (5%).
