This subject describes mathematical techniques applied to real world problems. Topics will be chosen from: the non-linear oscillator, traffic flow problems, population models, the simplex method, integer programming, network flow problems, general linear programming and transportation problems.

Learning Objectives:

  1. an understanding of how real world problems involving optimisation and problems from science and engineering can be solved using mathematical techniques;
  2. to become familiar with and apply commercial software packages to real world problem solving.

Assessment by coursework (tests and assignments) (40%); a three-hour examination (60%).
