Mathematics for Scientists and Engineers

Prerequisites: MA1002 or MA1003 or MA1101
Inadmissable Subject Combination: MA2101

39 lectures, 26 tutorials. First semester.

Staff: Dr S Belward, Dr G Sneddon.

Solid geometry, partial derivatives; line integrals, multiple integration, vector calculus; revision of ordinary differential equations, Fourier series, Laplace and Fourier transforms; partial differential equations; matrix algebra and eigenvalue problems.

Learning Objectives:

  1. introduction to topics in geometry, vector calculus, differential equations and linear algebra with emphasis on their implementation in engineering applications;
  2. to develop and exercise skill in developing models of physical phenomena and to become familiar with standard techniques for solving associated mathematical problems.

Assessment by coursework (tests and assignments); a three-hour examination.
