On completion of this subject, students will be expected to have achieved at least Minimum Social Proficiency (i.e. level 2) on the Australian Second Language Proficiency (ASLPR) scale and some to be on their way to achieving Minimum Vocational Proficiency (i.e. level 3). Descriptors of level 2 include points like: can satisfy routine requirements of social and non-specialist transactional situations and of a vocational field where linguistic demands are limited; in a film or a TV program can follow the language which is supported by visual cues; can get the gist of news stories on familiar topics; in terms of reading skills, can get the gist of simple news stories in a popular magazine or a newspaper, etc. High achievers will demonstrate some of the attributes required at ASLPR level 3, such as: can engage with facility in conversation with native speakers on everyday topics and on vocational topics relevant to own interest and experience; in such situations can convey fairly precise and complex meanings, though discussion cannot be pursued to the precision, complexity and depth which are often required in specialised fields; control of grammar at the sentence level is good; while errors may be made, they rarely interfere with understanding, or irritate or amuse native speakers of a similar socio-cultural background, etc. Students will be expected to be familiar with at least 500 of the most frequently used Kanji characters on completion of this subject.

Assessment by oral/aural and written examinations: listening (25%); speaking (25%); reading (25%); writing (25%).
