Health Promotion for Health Professionals

26 lectures, 6 hours workshops. First semester.
Available to all students enrolled in Occupational Therapy programs. Also available to students in other programs through negotiation with the Head of School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.
Learning and behaviour theories in relation to health. Health behaviour and belief models. Barriers to and promotion of behaviour change. Planning, implementing and evaluating health promotion activities. Culture and cross cultural aspects of health education and promotion. Analysis case studies in health promotion. Students will be required to complete a community based health promotion project.
Learning Objectives:
- describe the major learning, behaviour and health belief theories and relate these to health education and promotion activity;
- identify factors which are barriers to and which promote opportunities for behaviour change;
- identify the stages of program planning, implementation and evaluation;
- familiarity with potential strategies and evaluation techniques in health promotion;
- familiarity with the range of outcomes which might be evaluated;
- given case studies, ability to critically analyse the quality of health promotion activity;
- completion of a community based health promotion project.
Assessment by mid-semester examination (30%); final examination (30%); project (40%).
