Health Education and Promotion

Townsville

26 lectures, 9 hours workshops. First semester.

Available to all students enrolled in the Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy programs and the Diploma/Advanced Diploma of Indigenous Health. Also available to students in other programs through negotiation with the Head of School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.

Introduction to the principles of health promotion and the historical context in which health promotion evolved. The cross fertilisation of clinical practice and health promotion. Examines the various elements and models of health promotion and the relationship between health promotion and health education. Examine theories, barriers to and techniques involved in knowledge and behaviour change. Introduction to the production and evaluation of health education media. Students will be required to complete a community based health education activity.

Learning Objectives:

  1. describe the principles of health promotion outlined in the Ottawa Charter;
  2. identify ways in which health promotion and education are relevant to the students’ professional discipline;
  3. compare and contrast the elements of at least three heath promotion models;
  4. analyse the relationship between health promotion and health education;
  5. discuss theories about barriers to and techniques involved in knowledge and behaviour change;
  6. critically analyse the role, quality and range of health education media;
  7. introduction to the production and evaluation of health education media;
  8. complete a community based needs analysis for a health promotion project;
  9. develop a health education pamphlet for a defined audience.

Assessment by mid-semester examination (20%); final examination (30%); project (30%); pamphlet production (20%).
