39 lectures, 12 tutorials. First semester.
Major topics include: the transformation of the Roman Empire in the west; feudalism and the new monarchies; the growth of trade; popular and clerical religion; witchcraft; sex, marriage and the family in Europe before 1640.
Learning Objectives:
- to equip students with a broad knowledge of important aspects of medieval and early modern history;
- to enhance skills in locating, reading and interpreting historical sources;.
- to improve written and oral expression.
Assessment by bibliographic exercise (10%); tutorials (30%); essay (30%); examination (30%).
