Townsville

Inadmissable Subject Combination: HI3222

26 lectures, 26 tutorials. Second semester.

Staff: Dr R McGregor.

This subject examines key issues and themes in the history of northern Australia from the seventeenth century to the present, northern Australia being defined, roughly, as that part of the continent north of the Tropic of Capricorn. The major topics for consideration are: the European exploration of northern Australia; European settlement of the area; Aboriginal responses to white invasion; changing images and representations of the north in art and literature; the political and strategic significance of the north; and the marketing of the north for tourist consumption. These will necessarily be set within the broader parameters of Australian and world history.

Learning Objectives:

  1. provide a framework for understanding the history of northern Australia and the historical relationships between this area, Australia as a whole and the wider world;
  2. foster an appreciation of the cultural diversity of northern Australia and of changing attitudes toward this cultural diversity;
  3. foster competence in research appropriate to level 2 studies;
  4. develop skills in the organisation and expression of research findings appropriate to level 2 studies.

Assessment by two 2,500 word essays (30% each) (60%); seminar presentation (10%); examination (30%).
