Tropical Geomorphology Field Studies

Two week field intensive unit. Field trip to be at student’s expense and to be run from Cairns to Broome. Second semester intensive block mode.

Available to level 2 or level 3 Science or Arts students.

The subject examines patterns and processes of landform evolution, river channel and floodplain development and soil erosion with an emphasis on the North Australian environment.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to gain an understanding of the timescales and tempo of environmental change in tropical geomorphic systems;
  2. to understand the application of geomorphic knowledge to issues of environmental management;
  3. to develop expertise in geomorphic field and mapping techniques, data collection and analysis;
  4. to develop scientific writing and verbal presentation skills.

Assessment by field report (3,000 words) (25%); essay (2,000 words) (25%); final examination (50%).
