The aim of this subject is to examine the transformation of society by the Industrial Revolution turning the world upside down in a process of upheaval (via technological inventions) that continues to accelerate. By displacing the arts and crafts from their social and economic roles the machine created a gulf between people’s material life and their sensory and spiritual needs. This subject traces the impact of the industrial revolution upon the visual arts and beginning of the division between concept and execution, through the effects of movements such as Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Cubism and Surrealism to the science fiction/fantasy genre and the implications of digital technology and its use as an artistic tool.
Learning Objectives:
- to examine and analyse the process by which the restoration of human and aesthetic values are applied to the man made environment;
- analyse the tools of mass communication vis a vis their origins and concepts and their role as an essential charter of the design arts — graphic design, architecture, commercial and fantasy illustration.
Assessment by journal/notebook (20%); tutorials/participation (30%); seminar/workshop (20%); project/presentation (30%).
