Primary School Mathematics Education

Learning Objectives:

  1. demonstrate an understanding of the learning processes used by primary school age children of different cultural backgrounds as they are exposed to mathematics;
  2. demonstrate an awareness of the content and characteristics of developmentally appropriate and socially just mathematics curricula for primary school age children;
  3. evaluate various teaching methods, materials and media as they relate to primary school age children’s learning in the areas included in the National Mathematics Statement for Australian Schools;
  4. explore ways to organise the learning environment to ensure effective learning and teaching;
  5. construct and articulate a personal philosophy about teaching and learning mathematics.

Assessment by a critique of an article from a professional journal (20%); weekly problem-solving activity (20%); group seminar on planning learning experiences (20%); a two and a half-hour examination covering key aspects of the subject (40%).
