Mathematics for Primary and Early Childhood Teachers

26 lectures, 13 hours workshops. Second semester and RATEP mode only.

Available to students who have not completed successfully Year 12 Mathematics.

Staff: Dr I Putt.

Students investigate mathematical topics which form relevant background for primary education. These include mathematical systems, the real number system, elementary number theory, chance and data, informal geometry, measurement, pre-algebra and the use of technology in the classroom.

Learning Objectives:

  1. construct a sound conceptual and procedural knowledge of the mathematics currently taught in primary schools;
  2. develop confidence in the students’ ability to apply that knowledge in a primary school classroom.

Assessment by folio of activities (40%); one three-hour examination (60%).
