Reef and Coastal Zone Sediment Dynamics

Townsville, Cairns

Prerequisites: EA1001, EA1100 or MB1110, 18 level 2 Science subjects

22 lectures, 24 hours practicals, 50 hours field work. July/August intensive mode.

Staff: Dr K Woolfe.

Inner-shelf sedimentary systems and dynamics, inclusive of mangroves and estuaries. Reef sediment production and dynamics in relation to reef morphology and growth history. Introduction to the techniques of marine sedimentology taught in the field.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to equip students with a broadly-based knowledge of sedimentary processes and coastal dynamics using the North Queensland shelf as an example;
  2. to instill in students an appreciation of contemporary sediment systems in the context of a Quaternary continuum of changing environments;
  3. to provide students with an appreciation of the interplay between sedimentological processes and biotic communities;
  4. to equip students with a preliminary practical knowledge of how marine geoscience data is acquired, processed and integrated.

Assessment by practical tasks and assignments (75%); on-course tests (25%).
