Introductory Earth Science

Prerequisites: Senior Chemistry recommended
Inadmissable Subject Combination: EA1100

39 lectures, 30 hours practicals, 6 hours field work. First semester (on campus) and flexible delivery mode.

An introduction to the origin of the Earth, its structure and the processes of plate tectonics. The recognition of the common minerals of the Earth’s crust and their structures. The recognition of the common igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks and the processes involved in their formation. Volcanic hazards and earthquakes. The climate of the Earth through its history and future atmospheric change.

Assessment by practical work and field exercises (50%); assignments and a written examination (50%).
