Chemistry for water treatment methods of expressing concentration; physical properties of water; inorganic and organic chemical properties of water; solubility; carbonate system; thermodynamic basis for equilibrium; acid-base chemistry; organic and biochemistry; analysis and constituents in water.
Water and wastewater treatment screening and sedimentation; mass transfer and aeration; coagulation and flocculation; filtration; physical-chemical treatment for dissolved constituents; disinfection; aerobic treatment; anaerobic treatment.
Learning Objectives:
- to provide the understanding of chemistry for water and wastewater treatment;
- to introduce the background for design of water and wastewater treatment systems;
- to develop the skills for design of water and wastewater treatment plants.
Assessment by assignment and practical reports (30%); a three-hour examination (70%).
