Available to level 1 engineering students.

Chemistry: Atoms, ions. Atomic structure – Bohr’s model, orbitals. Bonds – ionic, covalent, metallic, VSEPR model. Molecular orbitals, band theory, metals, ceramics and semi conductors. Intermolecular forces – solids, liquids, gases, polar molecules and electronegativity, ion-dipole, London dispersion forces, structures of solids. Liquid-gas equilibria, vapour pressure, evaporation. Thermochemistry – closed systems, first law, enthalpy, combustion. Chemical equilibrium, basic kinetics. Electrochemistry – redox reactions, electrochemical cells, batteries, corrosion.

Physics: Electric charge, fields and potential. Magnetic fields. Induction and inductance. Optics. Images, mirrors and lenses. Interference and diffraction.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to provide students with the fundamental knowledge on chemistry and physics relevant to subsequent engineering study;
  2. to develop problem solving skills for application to problems in chemistry and physics.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
