Advanced Foundation Engineering

26 lectures. Second semester.

Available to postgraduates enrolled in civil or environmental engineering. The subject may also be undertaken by candidates enrolled in other schools subject to satisfying the appropriate head of school that they have an adequate background knowledge.

Advanced topics in the design of foundations and earth retaining structures. Bearing capacity and settlements of shallow and deep foundations, in granular and cohesive soils. Rigid and flexible earth retaining structures. Site investigation. Ground improvement. Introduction to reliability based designs. Special topics.

Learning Objectives:

  1. better appreciation of the design philosophy;
  2. critical evaluation of the various design methods;
  3. methods of handling variabilities in the geotechnical data;
  4. recent developments.

Assessment by assignments (20%); a three-hour examination (80%).
