Geo-engineering 3

Townsville

Prerequisites: CS3002

39 lectures, 13 tutorials, 3 hours practicals and 21 hours design practicals. First semester.

Available to civil engineering students.

Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering: foundation analysis and design – bearing capacity, two-dimensional consolidation settlement, empirically based methods for foundations on sand; structural design of footings; bearing capacity and settlement of piled foundations; earth retaining structures: methods and applications. Rock Engineering: engineering behaviour of rock and rock discontinuities; hemisphere projection technique with applications to rock slope stability; insitu rock stress and its measurement; introductory underground opening design. Case histories and special topics.

Learning Objectives:

  1. design shallow and piled foundations;
  2. estimate consolidation settlements;
  3. select appropriate types of earth retaining structures;
  4. apply hemisphere projection techniques to assesment of rock slope stability;
  5. appreciate the role of rock material and discontinuity strength in the behaviour of rock slopes and underground openings;
  6. appreciate the role of case histories in geo-engineering practice.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
