Cell Regulation

36 lectures, 4 tutorials, 36 hours practicals. Second semester.

This subject introduces the regulatory systems in cells and organisms as well as forming the basis for pharmacology.

Learning Objectives:

  1. the role of enzymes in cellular regulation;
  2. the different modes of communication between cells within an organism;
  3. the pathways for the synthesis, release and recycling of chemical messengers;
  4. the role of cell-surface receptors and gated ion channels in transmembrane signalling;
  5. intracellular regulation and secondary messenger systems.

Assessment by one three-hour examination (70%); practical class attendance and written laboratory assignments (30%).
