Archaeological Analysis and Interpretation

Prerequisites: AR2202

26 lectures, 26 hours practicals. Second semester.

Staff: Dr D Roe, Dr M Gibbs.

This subject will introduce students to the major methods of archaeological artefact analysis and interpretation and examine the proper modes of presenting data and producing an archaeological report. This will be achieved through a series of seminars, laboratory workshops and practical exercises. Throughout the semester students will also implement this training in the analysis of an archaeological assemblage and production of a major report.

Learning Objectives:

  1. learn the major methods of archaeological artefact analysis and interpretation;
  2. acquire knowledge of laboratory techniques and procedures;
  3. participate in the analysis and interpretation of an archaeological assemblage;
  4. learn how to compile and produce a professional archaeological report.

Assessment by practical book, exercises and class test (60%); major report (40%).
