Key Debates in Anthropology

26 lectures, 12 tutorials. Second semester.

This subject provides a broad overview of major theoretical approaches and methodological styles in social (or cultural) anthropology and establishes the foundation for further studies within the discipline. In particular a number of ethnographic studies are examined in detail in order to see the ways that anthropologists have built upon the works of such theorists as Marx, Durkheim and Weber.
Learning Objectives:
- possess a broad understanding of the major theoretical concepts informing anthropological inquiry;
- be critically aware of the different anthropological perspectives which are brought to bear on the interpretation of social life;
- have an in-depth knowledge of at least one key ethnography;
- be able to evaluate critically key intellectual problems and points of debate recurrent within the discipline.
Assessment by tutorial presentation (10%); tutorial participation (10%); essay (40%); examination (40%).
