Subject Description

    This subject explores group work as a method of social work and the role of group workers in social welfare practice. Students will learn about and reflect on the theory, dynamics and practices associated with group work and develop practical group work skills by planning, participating in and facilitating small groups during the skills workshop.

Learning Outcomes

  • identify and describe the phases of group development and their importance across a variety of settings
  • describe the theories and parameters of group structure and their relevance to both group tasks and group processes
  • identify, describe and demonstrate appropriate values and ethical practice when engaging in group work practice
  • plan, participate in and facilitate supportive groups and evaluate the impact of their participation through a process of critical reflection
  • articulate the importance of group work as a social work method of practice within workplace contexts

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (20%)
  • Oral > Presentation 1 - (40%)
  • Written > Essay (including multi-draft) 1 - (40%)

Assumed Knowledge:  To undertake this subject, students must have successfully completed 12 credit points (four subjects) of level 1 study at tertiary level
