Subject Description

    This subject will apply an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health and wellbeing of people, animals and ecosystems (One Health) to address emerging public health threats. The key guiding principles are collaboration, coordination, communication, co-design and capacity building. These will be used to engage and mobilise multiple sectors, disciplines and communities for the response to, management of, and recovery from emerging public health threats. An interdisciplinary academic team will facilitate students to apply systems and transdisciplinary thinking in response to existing and emerging global and local health threats.

Learning Outcomes

  • critically appraise the concepts and drivers of emerging public health threats
  • explain the socio-cultural, politico-economic and environmental challenges associated with emerging public health threats
  • describe the principles of One Health and interactions between animals, humans and ecosystems
  • apply a One Health approach using systems and transdisciplinary thinking to address public health threats
  • effectively communicate about complex issues and actions to a variety of audiences

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (20%) - Individual
  • Oral > Presentation 1 - (35%) - Group
  • Written > Essay (including multi-draft) 1 - (45%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Achieve an overall percentage of 50% or more. Complete and submit all pieces of assessment. Attend the face-to-face delivery component of this subject.
