Subject Description

    This subject introduces students to speech pathology processes and competencies through a range of learning activities. Students will develop knowledge, skills, and professional attributes in lectures and tutorials and have opportunities to apply these within a clinical placement under supervision of a clinical educator. Across these activities there will be an emphasis on planning, administering, analysing, and reporting of speech pathology assessment with children who have speech, language, and/or other communication needs. Students will also explore hearing, hearing disorders, and the role of speech pathologists within intervention for children and adults with hearing disorders.

Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate novice level clinical competency and reasoning in planning, administering, and reporting speech pathology assessment procedures including case history interviewing
  • explain the hearing process, disorders of hearing, and interventions for children and adults with hearing disorders
  • perform a hearing screening assessment and analyse and report associated findings
  • reflect on one's own clinical competency with reference to the Professional Standards for Speech Pathologists in Australia including client centred and evidence informed practices

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties; pass every weighted assessment item; participate in 100% of scheduled placement and clinical hours.
