Subject Description

    This subject requires students to complete an independent research project and a written thesis under the supervision and guidance of at least one research advisor. The research project should be informed by the completion of, or concurrently studied, RM8501. Once the independent research project is completed, students will be required to communicate the outcomes of their research in the form of a written thesis (12,000 words maximum) and a 20-minute exit seminar oral presentation to an audience of post-graduate peers, academics and researchers. The thesis and oral presentation should clearly communicate the topic of research. The thesis and oral presentation will undergo formal examination for the subject result by a panel external to the advisory team.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate knowledge of research principles and methods applicable to the relevant research area and/or related area of professional practice
  • Complete a substantial research project and thesis with creativity, initiative and a high level of autonomy and accountability
  • Analyse data and critically interpret results in the context of contemporary literature to solve a complex problem
  • Apply advanced formal reading and writing and collaborative skills for educational research in the relevant research area and/or related area of professional practice
  • Communicate specialised knowledge, ideas and arguments accurately, coherently and creatively to a variety of audiences through written manuscripts and oral presentations
  • Apply the principles of ethical practice to the conduct of research in the relevant discipline or area of professional practice by exercising responsibility, accountability and well developed judgement
