Subject Description

This subject requires students to prepare for and commence an independent research project under the supervision and guidance of at least one advisor. Students will be required to complete a written literature review of approximately 2000-5000 words in length. This critical review of contemporary and relevant literature should provide contextual background and a justification for the research proposal. Students will also be required to write a research proposal of approximately 2000-4000 words in length which should clearly define the topic, provide a rationale for the proposed research, outline methods for generating, gathering and/or analysing research data and discuss issues associated with those methods. The research proposal should be supported by the preparation of relevant ethics and biosafety applications (where applicable) to conduct the research. Students will also be required to give a 20-minute oral presentation of their research proposal during an entry seminar to an audience of post-graduate peers, academics and researchers. The literature review, research proposal and oral presentation will undergo formal examination for the subject result by a panel external to the advisory team.
