Subject Description

    Although the formal discipline of psychology is relatively new, humans have been asking psychological questions for millennia. This subject tracks the evolution of psychological thought, from its ancient foundations, to the emergence of psychology as a distinct discipline, through to the modern era. The subject highlights psychology's roots in both philosophy and science, as well as the sociocultural factors which have influenced the development of the field. The aim of this subject is to provide students with the context needed to understand contemporary psychology.

Learning Outcomes

  • Interpret and critique literature relevant to the history of psychology
  • Examine the philosophical and scientific foundations of contemporary psychology
  • Situate the theories and methods associated with the major schools of psychology within their broader sociocultural context, and evaluate the relative merits and limitations of these schools for understanding humans

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all weighted assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties.

Assumed Knowledge:  To undertake this subject, students must have successfully completed 12 credit points (four subjects) of level 1 study at tertiary level
