Subject Description

    Cognitive Psychology is the scientific study of mental processes, including attention, perception, memory, language, and problem solving. The purpose of this subject is to develop student understanding of the major theoretical perspectives and concepts, historical and contemporary research, and key debates within the field; while pragmatically applying research findings to everyday life and society. Special attention will be paid to human memory (as it underpins many mental processes) and the development of practical skills in the design, conduct, and reporting of Cognitive Psychological research.

Learning Outcomes

  • demonstrate knowledge of the major topics, research and theories in Cognitive Psychology
  • critically appraise and evaluate classic and contemporary debates in Cognitive Psychology
  • identify the applications that psychological principles within Cognitive Psychology have to everyday life and society
  • design, conduct and report a piece of research on a Cognitive Psychology topic

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (50%) - Individual
  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - Individual
  • A2 Group research project proposal 22.5%; Group research poster 22.5%; Individual group project peer assessment 5% - (50%) - Group & Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all weighted assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties; attend at least 80% of scheduled tutorials.

Assumed Knowledge:  To undertake this subject, students must have successfully completed 12 credit points (four subjects) of level 1 study at tertiary level
