PS2004 - Neuroscience in Physiotherapy

Enrolment in this subject is restricted to all students enrolled in the Bachelor of Physiotherapy, Bachelor of Physiotherapy IHCAP and the Bachelor of Physiotherapy Honours Programs.

Subject Description

This subject is designed to enable students to develop their knowledge of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology from the basic foundation information presented in first year anatomy and physiology subjects. Students will gain skills and knowledge in basic neurological assessment techniques and movement analysis.

Learning Outcomes

• apply knowledge of gross anatomy and physiology of the nervous system to neurological pathology
• integrate knowledge of neurological pathology with physiotherapy applications
• identify, examine and critique current evidence for neurological physiotherapy
• demonstrate application of appropriate neurological testing
• describe and explain the gross anatomy and physiology of the nervous system

Subject Assessment

• Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (50%) - Individual
• Written > Literature review - (15%) - Individual
• Performance/Practice/Product > Multi-station assessment task (MSAT) - (15%) - Individual
• Performance/Practice/Product > Portfolio - Individual
• Performance/Practice/Product > Practical assessment/practical skills demonstration - (20%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% inclusive of any penalties applied; achieve at least 50% for the practical and written exams; attend at least 80% of scheduled practical classes; attend all scheduled placements; achieve satisfactory/pass for portfolio tasks.
