Subject Description

    This subject examines contemporary Chinese history, politics and foreign relations with a particular emphasis on the 1949 establishment of the People's Republic of China through to the present era. It examines the approaches adopted by the Chinese government to stimulate economic and technological development since the Reform and Opening period, paying particular attention to both change and continuity within the China Model. Students will analyse contemporary domestic, regional and internationally focused policies, including the Belt and Road Initiative, as well as identifying both domestic and international issues affecting China. This subject is a critical step in understanding not only contemporary China, but also contemporary international relations and world politics.

Learning Outcomes

  • evaluate the historical, political and economic factors that have shaped contemporary Chinese domestic politics and foreign relations to identify the impact of changing leaders and geo-political dimensions, both inside and outside of the Chinese state
  • apply skills in cross-cultural awareness and analyse a range of issues and topics examining contemporary Chinese history, politics and foreign relations
  • apply knowledge of the interwoven nature of history and politics in China's relations with neighbouring, regional and extra-regional states, including Australia and the United States of America, to demonstrate both change and continuity in China's contemporary foreign relations and political outlooks
  • research and analyse contemporary Chinese history, politics and foreign relations to present a clear, coherent and independent exposition of knowledge and ideas
