Subject Description

    This subject introduces topics on nuclear physics, radiation physics, and their applications to medicine and health sciences. It gives an overview of the interactions between radiation and matter, and their importance to nuclear medicine, radiotherapy, medical imaging and radiation protection.

Learning Outcomes

  • solve mathematical, numerical, and computation problems relating to radiation transport, dosimetry, protection and/or therapies
  • undertake laboratory work collecting, analysing, and interpreting data for nuclear instrumentation and/or ionizing radiation applications
  • describe and discuss the quantitative aspects of nuclear physics and radiation physics, and the theoretical concepts that underpin them
  • appraise the risks associated with radiation hazards and practice basic safety procedures for handling radioactive sources
