PC6100 - Professional Practice for Pharmacists 1

Subject Description

Professional Practice for Pharmacists 1 is the first of two subjects that will teach the relevant skills and knowledge for the safe, collaborative, person-centered provision of clinical interventions for selected diseases, wellbeing and chronic disease management program services. Students will apply relevant skills and knowledge to the management of specified acute common gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal and ENT conditions, the provision of pharmacist-led health and wellbeing interventions including contraception and weight management services and the provision of cardiovascular chronic disease management programs. On completion of this subject, students will be prepared to provide selected clinical services as part of the North Queensland Community Pharmacy Scope of Practice Pilot.

Learning Outcomes

• Describe the scope of practice of a pharmacist in the management of selected patient presentations within the clinical and professional scope, and relevant legislative frameworks
• Relate knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology to the signs and symptoms to identify differential/provisional diagnosis, and potential risks of untreated disease
• Apply an approved clinical pathway to the management of patient presentations within the practice scope of the pharmacist in conjunction with the patient and/or carer, including treatment, documentation, follow-up and referral pathways
• Demonstrate history and examination skills and order relevant pathology, testing, and evaluate findings to formulate a diagnosis
