Subject Description

    Mental health, musculoskeletal and related pain conditions and respiratory conditions represent a significant health burden in Australia. This subject will explore the most significant psychological, respiratory and musculoskeletal conditions that affect the Australian population including a focus on differences in treatment approaches for Indigenous, non-Indigenous and migrant populations. The subject will also examine appropriate approaches to acute and chronic pain management. Students will apply a clinical reasoning process to develop comprehensive pharmaceutical treatment plans to manage psychological, musculoskeletal and respiratory conditions prevalent in northern Australia and tropical regions.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the pathophysiology and clinical presentation of common neurological, psychiatric, musculoskeletal and respiratory conditions relevant to pharmacy practice
  • Demonstrate appropriate screening and clinical skills necessary for the prevention, identification, and management of these conditions
  • Develop skills relating to the use of clinical guidelines and their application to the management of patients
  • Apply a clinical reasoning process to develop a comprehensive pharmaceutical care plan that includes prescription, over-the-counter complementary and non-pharmacological treatment options
  • Demonstrate professional communication withpatients and other health professionals

  • Performance/Practice/Product > Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) - (35%) - Individual

Assumed Knowledge:  As this is a core level 3 subject in the BPharm(Hons)/MPharm pathway, students will be expected to have completed all core level 1 and 2 subjects.
