Subject Description

    This subject presents the pathophysiology and management of cardiovascular & renal disease, respiratory disease and diabetes including both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Pharmacological management includes a systematic review of prescription and non-prescription medications and complementary and alternate medicines (CAMS), which addresses the quality use of medicines in the treatment of these conditions. This subject also considers aspects of pharmacy practice including pharmacy services, governance and management, and further develops communication skills including the use of digital health technologies and in dispensing and supply of medicines. Student knowledge in pharmaceutics will be further developed in the consideration of injectable dosage forms. Application of the knowledge and skills developed will be complemented by experiential placement.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply and demonstrate clinical skills in simulated environments and experiential placement
  • Describe the pharmacy services and government supported programs and initiatives that support the provision of safe and effective healthcare to individuals and communities in metropolitan, regional, rural and remote locations
  • Describe the pathophysiology and clinical presentation of common cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and diabetes and apply pharmacokinetic and therapeutic principles to ensure patient centered and rational drug use in the management of these conditions for the health of rural, remote and metropolitan populations including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • Demonstrate the safe and appropriate provision of pharmacy services including the supply of pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical education that reflects existing professional, funding and legislative frameworks
  • Demonstrate the relevant clinical / practical skills for the detection, management and/or monitoring of common cardiovascular, renal and respiratory conditions, and diabetes
