Subject Description

This subject presents the pathophysiology and management of gastrointestinal conditions and conditions of the eyes and ears including both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Pharmacological management includes a systematic review of prescription and non-prescription medications and complementary and alternate medicines (CAMS), which addresses the quality use of medicines in the treatment of these conditions. Dispensing skills will be further developed including a focus on the compounding of rectal dosage forms. This subject will also explore foundational principles of public health, the structure of the Australian healthcare system, and factors which impact upon the health status of the population. A key aspect of this subject will focus on the health of rural, remote and metropolitan populations including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. This subject will also introduce students to the principles and practice of primary health care and the integral role played by pharmacists in primary care interventions. This includes the provision of evidence-based advice and prescribing and supply of over-the-counter (S2 and S3) medications and for the management of self-limiting health conditions. Application of the knowledge and skills developed will be complemented by experiential placement.

  • Apply and demonstrate clinical skills in simulated environments and experiential placement Identify the fundamental aspects of the Australian healthcare system and apply this knowledge to the provision of health care by pharmacists
  • Describe the pathophysiology and clinical presentation of common gastrointestinal conditions and conditions of the eyes and ears and apply pharmacokinetic and therapeutic principles to ensure patient centered and rational drug use in the management of these conditions for the health of rural, remote and metropolitan populations including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • Demonstrate the relevant clinical / practical skills for the detection, management and/or monitoring of common gastrointestinal diseases and conditions, and conditions of the eyes and ears
