Subject Description

    This subject introduces students to ethical issues in professional practice and explores management practices relevant to the pharmacy practice environment. This subject considers the scientific basis relevant to the design and preparation of solid, liquid and semi-solid dosage forms, including the packaging, labelling, transportation and storage requirements of pharmaceuticals. The role of complementary and alternate medicines (CAMS) in pharmacy will be introduced. Skills development includes pharmaceutical calculations and basic techniques in the compounding and production of pharmaceutical formulations. The subject also delivers the teaching of quality control procedures in the pharmaceutical industry including pharmacopoeia quality testing of dosage forms. Students will attend an experiential placement in a pharmacy practice setting.

Learning Outcomes

  • Discuss ethical and management principles in pharmacy practice
  • Describe the role of complementary and alternate medicines in contemporary pharmacy practice
  • Explain the scientific principles of pharmaceutics as they relate to liquid, solid and semi-solid dosage forms, including bioavailability, packaging, labelling, transportation, and storage
  • Describe the testing and quality control procedures that apply to pharmaceutical raw materials and the preparation of dosage forms
  • Apply knowledge and practical skills in the dispensing and compounding of pharmaceutical preparations
  • Discuss and reflect upon contemporary pharmacy practice in a pharmacy practice setting
