OT1011 - Introduction to Occupation and Occupational Therapy

Subject Description

    The purpose of this subject is to establish an understanding of the concept of occupation and explore how participation in meaningful occupation offers purpose and quality to the human experience. Students will explore the broad role of occupational therapy as a profession and understand foundational models relevant for contemporary clinical practice.

Learning Outcomes

  • Define, classify, and analyse occupation and examine its relationship to occupational therapy and practice
  • Examine the breadth, scope and role of occupational therapy in relation to a variety of practice settings
  • Analyse occupational therapy practice and decision making within a variety of clinical settings and situations through the application of relevant occupational therapy models and frameworks
  • Analyse occupational roles and transitions across the lifespan and examine the influence of personal and environmental factors on occupational choice and development

  • Written > Examination (centrally administered) - (40%) - Individual
  • Oral > Presentation 1 - (20%) - Group
  • Participation > Class participation - Individual
  • Written > Case study analysis - (40%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties; achieve at least 50% for the final examination; participate in at least 80% of scheduled workshops
