Subject Description

    This subject examines the political context of healthcare and health equity in relation to nursing and midwifery. Students will explore health equity through reflection on the political, economic, social and cultural factors associated with health care delivery and heightened vulnerabilities as a consequence of discrimination and/or marginalisation. Promoting health equity calls for policy initiatives, advocacy and inclusion in all sectors and at all levels of government and health care delivery. Strategies for ensuring health equity through policy development and inclusive practice will be examined.

Learning Outcomes

  • Examine the political, economic, social and cultural elements of health equity
  • Compare the role of federal, state and local governments in shaping health equity and inclusion
  • Identify strategies to promote health equity in vulnerable and disadvantaged populations and communities in the Australian context
  • Reflect on and discuss how nurses and midwives influence the development and application of health policies for health equity
  • Evaluate and apply inclusive practices to promote and sustain the well-being of people using health services

Special Assessment Requirements
