Subject Description

    The subject focuses on promoting health when physiological processes are challenged across the pregnancy, birth and postnatal continuum. Students will develop critical decision making skills essential to woman centred collaborative midwifery practice for the woman and her newborn.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain physiological and pathophysiological factors that influence midwifery care
  • Describe the role of the midwife in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating safe, effective and evidence based care interventions which promote health across the pregnancy, birth and postnatal continuum
  • Plan and implement strategies for culturally safe midwifery care including the provision of advocacy, education and information
  • Appraise the use of available technology to maintain and promote health during the pregnancy, birth and postnatal continuum
  • Apply the NMBA (2018) Midwife standards for practice in supporting woman centred care

  • Recruit 2 women for Continuity of Care Experiences; must pass hurdle assessment - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; participate in at least 80% of scheduled on-campus tutorial classes; participate in all clinical skills classes; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties; achieve a satisfactory grade for the portfolio assessment task and PEP; achieve at least 50% for the examination; recruit 2 women as CCE. Examinations may be scheduled outside regular university examination period.
