Subject Description

    This subject introduces students to the evolution of nursing and midwifery as professional disciplines. Historical and contemporary professional, political and regulatory influences on professional practice will be discussed and evaluated. The role of the registered nurse and midwife within the healthcare team is also explored and students are encouraged to examine their own concept of being a healthcare professional. In this subject the concept of evidence based practice is introduced as a foundation for person-centred practice.

Learning Outcomes

  • Examine how events in history have influenced the evolution of nursing and midwifery
  • Outline the role of professional and statutory authorities in the regulation of the health professions
  • Discuss the concepts of evidence based practice, cultural safety and person-centred health care
  • Describe the role of the registered nurse and midwife in the context of the healthcare team

Subject Assessment

  • Written > Test/Quiz 1 - (20%) - Individual
  • Participation > Class participation - Individual
  • Written > Essay (including multi-draft) 1 - (50%) - Individual
  • Oral > Elevator pitch - (30%) - Individual

Special Assessment Requirements

Passing requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; participate in at least 80% of scheduled tutorials/specified online content; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% after the application of any penalties such as late penalties.
