MO1024 - Advanced and Extended Scope Exposure

Prerequisites:Participants are responsible for ensuring they are practicing in accordance with the regulatory instruments of their specific allied health profession, within their own personal scope of practice and experience level and in accordance with the policies of their employer.

This module has been developed specifically for allied health professionals in the following professions: Dietetics, Medical Imaging, Physiotherapy and Podiatry.

Subject Description

    This module will explore an advance practice, extended scope or dual qualification role relevant to both the participant's profession and identified local health service's needs. The module will explore core concepts of these roles including scope of practice and clinical governance, and then examine the selected practice, scope or role in greater depth including clinical and operational aspects of implementation in a health service and the training pathway for a health professional. The participant is required to complete an exposure experience that involves observation of practice (work shadowing) and/or in-depth interview/s conducted with professionals implementing the practice, scope or role. The exposure experience will be arranged by the participant The advance practice, extended scope or dual qualification roles that can be examined in this module are: Dietetics - Dual Qualification: Comprehensive diabetes management including credentialled diabetes educator and provision of advice on insulin dose adjustment - Extended scope: Gastrostomy management Medical Imaging - Dual Qualification: Radiographer/sonographer Physiotherapy - Primary contact (complex practice) - Advanced practice: Pathology or imaging ordering (beyond entry-level scope) or independent health service intake, management and discharge responsibility Podiatry - Prescribing: Endorsed prescriber with advanced practice in high risk foot management. Note prescribing is not an extended scope for podiatry, however, understanding the endorsement process and scope of endorsed podiatrists is important for podiatrists progressing towards the endorsement pathway, thus its inclusion in the module. Other professions can propose a specific scope to examine in this module which will be negotiated with the module coordinator.

  • identify local service needs, relevant to an individual profession and multi-disciplinary team in a rural and remote context, that prompt service delivery improvements in keeping with local service strategic intent
  • assess strategies and design plans, aligned with local service needs, to extend and reframe early career knowledge and skills
