Subject Description

    This subject comprises key aspects of advanced manufacturing engineering and technology for a wide spectrum of materials, materials selection in engineering, and areas of emerging technologies, such as nanotechnology and medical manufacturing. Topics covered include casting, forming, shaping, precision machining processes, advanced machining processes, rapid prototyping, 3D printing, and freeform fabrication, micro-fabrication, nano-fabrication and medical manufacturing; materials selection - the basics and case studies; process selection - case studies; materials and the environment.

Learning Outcomes

  • describe and summarise key features of different manufacturing processes
  • identify different manufacturing and finishing processes according to the final product requirements
  • analyse material properties and their impacts on process selection
  • combine knowledge on advanced manufacturing processes with experimental and analysis skills

  • Written > Technical report - (15%) - Individual
