MD7106 - Medicine Honours (Part-time) Part 4 of 4

This program follows the traditional format of one year of Honours study post graduation. It is available to recently graduated medical students who have not already completed an in-course honours degree. The program develops research skills, as students develop and complete a research project under expert supervision. Normally the program is completed within 12 months if studied full time, or two years part time. Students who are currently enrolled in the sixth year of the JCU Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree who meet the appropriate admission requirements may apply to commence this course on a part time basis during their sixth year. This subject is available to students admitted to the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery with Honours (Graduate Entry) course only.

Subject Description

This subject is the third of four subjects (the others being MD7103, MD7104, MD7106) that in combination constitute a part-time honours option for the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery course. The subject consists of research undertaken for preparation of a thesis and seminars which accompany the research process. Students will be able to choose a research project related to a medical discipline. All projects are subject to approval by the honours coordinator in the School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Learning Outcomes

• To enable students to analyse data, apply and use appropriate methods and critically evaluate results
• To develop the skills required to carry out a literature search and to critically evaluation the literate
• To develop the skills necessary to formulate a research question and project plan

Subject Assessment

As this subject is part of a subject chain, a final standard grade (e.g. P, C) will only be recorded for each subject after successful completion of all parts of the subject chain.

• Oral > Presentation 1 - (20%) - Individual
• Written > Thesis/dissertation - (70%) - Individual
• Written > Literature review - (10%) - Individual
